Working with nature
The cut flower industry still has a long journey ahead, as traditional practices continue to significantly impact our environment and global economic issues. From the beginning of this beautiful floral journey, Nettie of the Gorge has been dedicated to environmental concerns and preservation and promoting sustainable floral design through her chosen methods, materials, and awareness of the flower supply chain.
Nettie of the has never used floral foam, a harmful single-use plastic that pollutes water and is non-compostable, she avoids synthetic poly ribbon and refrains from working with bleached, dyed, or artificial flowers. Instead, she prioritises materials that are naturally degradable, compostable, or can be repurposed.
Nettie recognises the heavy carbon associated with some imported flowers so she prefers to source local, seasonal blooms whenever possible. During the British growing season, most of her fresh and dried flowers come from Shropshire farms within a 15-mile radius. While her floral business operates all year-round, providing stunning weddings and seasonal workshops, she is mindful of the air miles and practices of suppliers when importing flowers. Nettie's wonderful clients book in advance for classes, events, or weddings, allowing her to source the necessary flowers, reducing wastage.
There is undoubtedly more to be done in the industry, I am continually seeking better ways to work harmoniously with nature.
